I woke on the couch. It took me a minute to realize what woke me. It was two things the doorbell and also Jacion detaching from me where we were tangled up under the throw on the couch. We’d picked up some food on our way home then ate it on the couch while watching Christmas movies on Netflix. Almost like we’d been together for the last three years. It felt so right how we just laughed and joked like old times. My thoughts were interrupted by the voices at the door.

“—that’s all fine and well but I still need to speak to my daughter,” my mom's irate voice was stern.

I knew she’d be pissed but I didn’t think that warranted a face-to-face conversation. I was going to call her tomorrow and explain the situation but her showing up here was crazy. I get she was pissed but she wasn’t the only one, so was I.

Before I could sit up good my mom was in front of me, but she wasn’t alone. Haven was with her. She mouthed the words “I’m sorry,” so I knew she tried to stop her from coming here. It was likely mom worked herself up and she wouldn’t let anyone tell her to wait.

“What is wrong with you Noelle Marie Grace. I didn’t raise you like this!” She shouted like I left out on meeting the president and not because I was being ambushed.

“Ms. Grace—” Jacion tried to interject but he didn’t have to.

“No! I’m sorry Jacion but no,” she shook her head at him then snapped her head back in my direction. “I want an answer right now and I’m not leaving here until I get it.”

Because I knew she wasn’t lying so I spoke. “Nothing mom.”

“Nothing! Nothing! I take the time out to plan a get together to welcome Jacion in the family and you leave without a word. Then you say nothing is wrong?” She yelled.

“Yes, ma nothing is wrong with me but there is definitely something wrong with you.”

“Noelle, I know you’re thirty-five years old, but you will respect me,” she snapped.

“Mom all I do is respect you. Where is mine or any of your children? You walk around here pushing and manipulating us for whatever reason and that’s not respect. You knew I barely wanted to come for Christmas, but you tell me it’s a quiet dinner with just us and you invited the whole family over. Family you know I don’t really deal with because all they do is gossip and disrespect me. Today me and Jacion heard one of my family members talking about how they might slip my man his number and the other wanted to have sex with him cause my ex wasn’t cute, but Jacion is. When does it end!”

“Lower your tone when you speak to me Noelle. I mean it,” she hissed.

“Ok, Ma. You’re right. I’m wrong. You get to ambush me, and I don’t get to be upset. Got it. I’m sorry your party was ruined by my selfishness.
